The Quantum Leap project is a top secret military project headed by the projects lead scientist Sam Beckett in the distant future. The Quantum Leap project is a time travel experiment that on many levels succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest dreams and in other aspects failed in several technical areas.
The Quantum Leap Accelerator was created and maintained with the help of Sam’s wife Tina and Gooshie the teams technical expert. After stepping into the Quantum Leap Accelerator Sam’s trip through time left his brain in non-technical terms swiss cheesed. Sam found himself not only traveling back in time he had inhabited another person in times body and unable to remember who he really was or where he was from. Including being unable to remember the wife he left behind in the future.
Sam’s only link to the future is Rear Admiral Al Calavicci who through a mind link and the use of a holo-imaging chamber. Al can appear to Sam in the form of a hologram that nobody else can see or hear with the exception of psychics. Al is also the only person who can see Sam which caused financial problems for the project in the future. Since the only proof that Sam was traveling through time was Al’s word.
Luckily Sam’s mission on each of his leaps is to change the future one good deed at a time. Sometimes changing the world in unexpected ways and in one instance changing the board that sat on the Quantum leaps funding. Al helps Sam change the past by providing him with all the information that Ziggy a personal super computer that Sam built before the leap can provide. On the time, place and whereabouts of Sam in his current situation.
